![]() I was on the bus during those few days and I heard this whoman in her mid twenties happily proclaiming to her friend on her handphone (and possibly to the entire bus), that she was going to Huang Na's funeral to get 4D numbers. While many people came forth at her funeral to donate money and other things to her parents, there are also many people who attend the funeral just to get 4D numbers. One good example is that of Huang Na's (we all know who she is) death. Yet, on another side of the story, why can't the family and relatives of those who have been confirmed dead or missing be left alone to deal with their grief, and to have the choice has to whether they want the deceased's name to be made public, to be able to control who can participate in the funeral of the one who is dead? An action like that could be justified by the fact that when the names are made public, it is easier for family and relatives to come forward to claim the body, manage the last rites, etc. Perhaps this is the reason why when such disasters happen, the media would not hesitate to broadcast the names of those who are missing or dead. Yet, when names are actually attached to these people, and in great multitude as well, it is then that we feel the genuine sense of sadness, sorrow and sympathy towards these people. ![]() While we can just speak of our feelings on these subjects, these people to us will only remain dead bodies laid across mass graves, they have no name, no face, no individuality, no personality to us. While such actions are a reflection of how we feel towards these tragic happenings, while we are telling the world that we are not indifferent in our attitudes, and while we ourselves would like to believe that it is true, deep down inside, these events and the victims are well, pretty distant from us.Ĭoming across this name list of those who have died on Sep 11 in NYC, I can't help but feel a genuine sense of sadness for them and their families. What do we do next? We try to help in whatever way we can, donating money, food, clothes etc. Rather, when such events happen, what most of us can do is to feel that momentary sorrow for those who have perished and their loved ones. I don't mean to discuss such a grave subject on New Year's Eve, and I'm not going to discuss the failings of the international society nor the horrors of terrorism. I stumbled upon this page called the Blog of Death, and among them was a page which records every single victim of the September 11 attacks, all their names from A to Z, literally.
